Whats
new in Physics 131?
- When you go to the LAB sessions, you
need to READ and UNDERSTAND the procedure of that day's lab. The lab
manual is available in the last (right-most) column of the WEEKLY
SCHEDULE of Lectures and Homework. In addition
you need to bring with you a LAB NOTE BOOK. A lab note book is a book
which has one side of the page a GRAPH paper, while the other one is
lined paper. They all have page numbers.
- First real on-line assignment is due in about 4 and half hours
from now at 4:00AM 9/8. If you still do not have the masteringphysics
access key, you will not be able to solve it. I always drop one lowest
score on the assignment in the final average for the grade. For those
who get a zero without trying, this will be the assignment we will drop.
- The Laboratory and Recitation Sections start tomorrow 9/8. Please
ATTEND!
- A new assignment should be on line by the end of Monday 9/8. Stay
Tuned!
Whats not new in Physics 131?
- Error & Uncertainty analysis write up is now linked from the
schedule page
- If your book and
masteringphysics "key" is still not available, please do the end
of the chapter problems from your friend's books and practice the
mastering physics techniques next week when you get the keys. One lowest score on
the HW will be dropped, in the final average. So in this case, it will
have to be the first home work. Please
do not send me emails regarding this. We will talk about this in the
classs.
- Welcome to
Physics 131, Part 1, Fall '08: This is a course on mechanics,
dynamics, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics
- We will use the
fourth edition of PHYSICS for SCIENTISTS & ENGINEERS by
Prof.
Douglas C. Giancoli, Pearson/Prentic Hall
Publication.
- In addition
to this book, we will use MASTERING
PHYSICS, the web-based
assignment system for this course. You should
get the access key to this system:
- at
a
reduced cost, by buying it with the book (HIGHLY
RECOMMENDED) or
- you can also buy the
access key alone, at a higher price.
- To register for MASTERING PHYSICS, you will need
your access code which you will buy and a CourseID. The CourseID for
this
course is: PHYSICS131MPDESHPANDE08
- Register with your password and the
above course ID. There is help available to navigate around on
this website. A practice
assignment (no - credit) is already setup, please go ahead and
try to solve this.
- Lectures will be held on
Monday-Wednesday-Friday at 8:30AM in the
Stonybrook Union Auditorium 123
- The first class will be held on
Wednesday, September 3, 2008
All lecture notes will be available after the lecture, on the
Lecture-Schedule webpage in pdf file format
- Recitation and Laboratory
(Phy133) sections will
start in the Week of September 8, 2008. Attendance
in both is mandatory.
- A simple math test (self-evalution) will be offered on the
first day, September 3, in the classs
to help you evaluate your readiness for this class.
- This is a fast paced course which assume mastery of algebraic
methods and good knowledge of basic calculus. If you are underprepared,
the results can be detremental to your career as a scientist or an
engineer. Physics
125, a slower
paced course, covers the same material, is a good substitute for
Physics 131 for those who are not ready for the high speed of this
course.
- A few simple but essential rules in this class:
- Switch off the cell phones as you come in to the class
- No electronic/electrical equipment should be operated in this
class: no phones, no beepers, no emails during class, no text
messaging, no webserfing, unless I ask you to look at a certain website
immediately....,no refrigerators, no TVs, no washing machines, .... no
nothing!
- All we want in this class is your attention and conversations
we will have about physics.
