Course Organization

The course is comprised of three main divisions:

Lecture

Lectures are held in the Student Union Auditorium. Each student is a member of either section 01 or 02 of the class and attends the lecture indicated in by the SOLAR System. There is no difference between the two lectures. On any given day, Professor Drees or Professor Hemmick will repeat the very same lecture twice, covering the same topics.

Recitation

Because the class has so many students, it is difficult for students to receive individual attention during the main lecture. For this reason, the course is additionally divided into 15 so-called recitation sections numbered R01-R15. Recitation sections are typically focussed upon helping students to understand and complete that week's homework assignment. Recitations are taught by faculty members. During a recitation meeting, it is possible that a quiz, additional homework, or some other instrument used to determine the student's recitation grade will be assigned and/or collected. The schedule of recitations is shown in the chart below:

Laboratory

Students taking PHY121 are required to also be signed up for PHY123. PHY123 is the laboratory associated with the course. The difference in course number is artificial. Students will be graded for the course as a whole and receive the same grade in both PHY121 and PHY123.

The course as a whole is divided into 29 different lab sections numbered L01-L29. Each lab section meets independently for a 2 hour period. The lab is supervised by a Teaching Assistant who is also responsible for grading the lab reports. Lab reports are handed in by putting them in the appropriate labelled slot in Room A-131. The due date of your lab will be specified by your TA.
