- FINAL GRADES ARE
POSTED ON THE SOLAR SYSTEM AS OF TODAY 1/2/2008 AM.
- The maximum in the
final was 96/100, the minum was 2/100.
- What makes my grade?
- 20% weight for each
of the midterms + 30% weight for the final + 20% weight for your
Lab section + 10% weight for your recitation grade: all together
form a cumulative grade out of 100
- Top 5% students get
an A
- Next 10% get an A-
- Next 10% get a B+
- Next 10% get a B....
and the pattern continues
- I do not curve the
grade, so making up an expectation
based on comparision of your grade
with class average does not always help.
- The problems on
final were graded by Recitation Instructors (Faculty in Physics
Department)
- I have gone thorugh
the blue books over again and check and double checked their sums.
- If you still have
concerns, come meet me at my office.

- Laboratory (Physics 133) and recitation section schedule, the
teachers, their room numbers and office hours are available on the SECTIONS page.
- Please note that you HAVE TO REGISTER FOR
PHYSICS 133 if you are taking Physics 131. A
common grade will be assigned at the end of the semester for the two

if you do not come prepared to do experiments.
- COURSE ID FOR MASTERING PHYSICS IS: MPDESHPANDE0004
- It has been pointed out that there are
not enough text books and online kits available at the campus
bookstore. We will extend the deadline for the home work assignments to
September 18, but there will more problems to do to cover the next
week's portion of the syllabus. I will appropriately reduce the number
of problems from this week's assignment if I feel necessary. New books
are expected on September 15th.
- NOTE DATE
CHANGE:First home work assignment is on the web due September 17, 2007
- EOC
(End of Chapter) problems are due in HAND WRITTEN FORM IN
THE RECITATION SECTIONS STARTING SEPTEMBER 17th, 2007.
The other
problems can be solved and submitted on the web for grading.
- It is very important that you do the practice assignment
(Assignment 0) which will train you in the symantics and workings of
MasteringPhyiscs. The due date for this work is September 17, so that
you get used to working with MasteringPhysics. There are no
points for this home work.
- NOTES from the
last two lectures are linked from the schedule page
- Recitations
sections will start on September 10,
2007
- Welcome to
Physics 131, Part 1, Fall '07: This is a course on mechanics,
dynamics, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics
- We will use Essential University Physics, First
Edition, Volume 1, by Prof. Richard
Wolfson for this course. This is a Pearson, Addison & Wesley
publication. ISBN 0-8053-3829-2
- In addition
to having this book, we will use MASTERING
PHYSICS, the web-based
assignment system for this course. You can
get the access key to this system:
- at
a
reduced cost, by buying the volumes 1 and 2 together now, (HIGHLY
RECOMMENDED) or
- you can also buy the
access key alone, at a higher price.
- Lectures will be held on Monday-Wednesday-Friday at 8:30AM in the
Stonybrook Union Auditorium 123
- The first class will be held on
Wednesday, September 5, 2007
- All lecture notes will be available after the lecture, on the
Lecture-Schedule webpage in pdf file format
- A simple math test will be offered on the first day of the classs
to help you evaluate your readiness for this class.
- A few simple but essential rules in this class:
- Switch off the cell phones as you come in to the class
- No electronic/electrical equipment should be operated in this
class: no phones, no beepers, no emails during class, no text
messaging, no refrigerators, no TVs, no washing machines, .... no
nothing!
- All we want in this class is your attention and conversations
we will have about physics.
